About the author
Jess Áine Barry (she/her/hers) is a visual artist and writer living in Melbourne, Australia. She is a Leo sun, Scorpio moon and Sagittarius rising. She is also a triplet and was born on the same day as Dua Lipa. She connects with her rising sign, enjoying the outdoors, stargazing and reading, as any good centaur would. She draws inspiration from folklore, nature and the power of women (inclusive of all women). Jess Áine lives with Ehlers-Danlos (EDs), endometriosis, neurodiversity and the death of her mother. She finds art, her dog’s company and her garden healing. She works to bring forth pieces that evoke nature and a sense of hope for the future. Her writing practice is supported by drawing and painting characters and worlds as she brings them into being. Her illustrations and written works have been published together as often the pieces inform each other.
What I write about
I dabble in the mediaeval with a dash of nature-worship to conjure a sense of hope for the future. I explore themes of: mother-loss, outsiders overcoming adversity, magic, the natural world, and feminine power. My inspirations include (but are not limited to): The Rider Waite tarot deck, trees of any kind, dogs, cats and any critter (oh and frogs!) And the writers: J.R.R Tolkien, C.S Lewis, Peter S. Beagle, Ursula Le Guin, Diana Wynn-Jones, Alexander Llyod and Susan Cooper.
